Time geography
An integrative ontological framework for analyzing space and time.
Time geography—sometimes called time-space geography—is a way of looking at how people, animals, and environments interact across both space and time. It’s not a single academic subject, but more of a flexible framework and a visual language that treats space and time as the basic ingredients for studying change, social contact, ecological relationships, and individual life stories. Originally created by human geographers, it’s now used in fields like transportation planning, regional development, geography, anthropology, studies of how people spend their time, ecology, environmental science, and public health. As Swedish geographer Bo Lenntorp put it, it’s a basic approach that each researcher can connect to their own theoretical ideas.
The framework was developed by Swedish geographer Torsten Hägerstrand in the mid-1960s, building on his earlier work tracking human migration patterns in Sweden. He wanted a way to understand large social and environmental systems by taking a physical approach—studying how events actually happen within a time-space setting. He was influenced by ideas from spacetime physics and the philosophy of physicalism. In his earliest version, Hägerstrand described the key ideas informally: each individual follows a path through time and space, and these life paths are caught in a web of constraints—some from biology and physics, others from personal and collective decisions. He couldn’t list every possible constraint, but he outlined three main types: capability constraints (limits from the body or tools a person can use), coupling constraints (limits on where, when, and how long individuals must join others, tools, or materials to produce, consume, or trade—similar to critical path analysis), and authority constraints (limits on who controls a given space or time). To illustrate these, Hägerstrand created new kinds of diagrams, partly inspired by musical notation. These include the space-time aquarium (or cube), which shows individual paths in a 3D graph; the space-time prism, which maps what someone can do given their constraints; bundles of paths, where individuals come together due to constraints, creating “pockets of local order”; concentric tubes or rings showing limits like reach or hearing range; and nested hierarchies of domains, which show authority boundaries.
